the third edition of figure’s recently launched run of limited edition hybrid discs sees the label head helping a 90’ies classic to new glory. when originally released in 1995, ian pooley’s celtic cross destroyed clubs everywhere with its iconic vocal sample and hypnotic bass bleeps. len faki’s remix treatment is a sublte one, which manages to leave most of the original’s elements in tact while still expanding upon its fiercely banging character

ian blevins is the keeper of the jewel in the crown. this is his second offering for the esp institute. picking up right where we left off, side a unleashes another explosive big room belter with resume a driving rhythmic monster that takes advantage of the whips and cracks in ian’s drum machine arsenal, while warm chords lay a foundation for a quirky lead melody and rubbery pulse to dance upon. akin to hannibal, blevins esp institute debut in 2015, the arrangement here toys with us before revealing the true guts of the track—this time characterized halfway through by a punctuating gangster piano hook. on side b, poor old head utilizes ian’s signature drum styling we’ve come to adore, but here he establishes swells of melancholy via bending notes that meow and purr, beautifully ebbing and flowing though an array of incongruous dial tones and bells—shakey and barely out of sync, yet cradling a loosely drawn chord progression. these two songs will smack you up before they rub you down.

wake up! records is proud to announce rise and fall, the debut ep by ian oakley, a new talent from toronto. skewing acid-tinged house with languid, lopsided grooves, rise and fall weaves a mix of dubbed-out elements into a unique, intuitive whole. “thumbs” evokes a liminal space perfectly suited for late night cruises and hypnotized foors. “rise and fall” stays true to its name, a slippery bassline ebbing and fowing against a elegantly mellow beat. on the b-side, “bug jam” indulges oakley’s electro side, while label co-owner benjamin brunn remixes “rise and fall,” reimagining the original as a spacious, kosmiche slow burner. rise and fall is a confdent debut, as potent in headphones as on the decks and a welcome edition to the growing wake up! catalogue.

ian blevins is from england but hes quite the dude. this is his first offering for the esp institute. on side a, meet the happy beast named hannibal, a big room tune that ticks every box your heart may desire bone dry drum production, atmospheric arpeggios, soaring strings and pads, a beautifully sweeping bass progression and an overall sense of euphoria goosebumps guaranteed. on side b, welcome aunt poly cools us down a little bit stripping back the instrumentation, minimizing any superfluous effects, and layering a sparse bassline and droning synths over a laidback 808 all to a relaxed tempo. blevins debut proves that from the right point of view, familiar elements and motifs can take on a new life whilst reminding us just how the rave can feel. these two songs will increase your serotonin levels.

our last ep of the year is a special one as it marks one year of releasing records for keep it zen so we called on ian blevins along with remixes from amsterdams frits wentink and berlins nick beringer to end our year on a high. ian blevins is an influential name in the underground house scene and was mentioned by resident advisor as one of ibizas most talented residents. years of passionately listening to and searching for music, both new and old, has seen ians style mature which has helped shape his own productions and his mysterious duo al gobi.

the deep house is the genre of reference that the author aims to customize in his title track >say what<. it is a ganglion of rhythm and foggy atmospheres where a voice reproduces a sort of rhyme. it is pretty similar to >revenge<, where the loop cyclic effect is preferred to another though, and where the voice (reduced to a sharp tip) pierces the four quarters in place of the snare drum. both tracks are presented in their remixed versions: the first made by julie marghilano and the second by matthew burton.

with the name of his new ep, ruede hagelstein sticks to the maritime visual theme of his recent watergate 13 compilation. the parrotfish is a colourful thalassian, who is as much skilled at submerging in mystical depths as ruedes light-footed producer-style. the grooves on the first side are filled with a collaboration between hagelstein and emerson todd.
